Why the fuck do I keep so much shit?!

So recently, after having had a week off work, I decided in my infinite wisdom to do some sorting out. Now this seems to be a recurring thing with me, as every time I have time off work I seem to end up tidying shit up; last time I threw out like 5 full black rubbish bags of paper alone. So this time it was no different, only I didn’t quite chuck so much.

On top of my wardrobe for some time now, had been some bigass box that my surround set came in. I’d kept it down here since it wouldn’t fit in the loft whole (I try to keep boxes for my shit for when I move it), and I didn’t really want to break the box up, so I’d shoved it on top of my wardrobe to keep it outta the way. Only I’d started to fill it up with shit since it seemed a perfectly sensible idea at the time; massiveass box = storage for crap. Only what I was keeping in it was generally shit.

Most of it, I discovered was old school/6th form/college work, only it wasn’t like stuff I should have been keeping, it was just old notes and drawings and such. Barely legible garbage in other words. So on my last week off  I emptied this box of all the crap that was in it to be actually quite scared at the amount of shit I’d been keeping.  Aside from the old school shit, there were about 4 billion computer magazines from around 1999 – 2004ish. Only most of them were in pretty bad shape, and had nothing of any interest in, in fact I only kept a couple for the hell of it, mostly really old ones from the mid 90s, as those tend to be slightly interesting.

In addition to the massive box o’ shit, I decided to go upstairs into the loft and investigate what joys lie up there, as only about 50% of the stuff I own(ed) is kept in my room. Oh man.

This was another story. The amount of shit I’d been keeping was simple staggering. To start with, I had at least 3 computers assembled up there, and probably another 3 in components I had lying around. Not to mention several boxes of just… cables.

So I decided that my collection of “spares” (that’s what I’d been telling myself it was I guess) needed to go on a diet; a very lean one.

As you can see, the amount of crap up there is…. 😐

The box of cables was probably the most interesting, as it seems I’d been keeping cables for stuff I no longer owned, even stuff I’d thrown out maybe 6 years ago. The fact I had about 20 computer power cables was… concerning, not to mention the amount of SCART cables also. So after I’d thrown out any cable that no longer had a device associated with it, or something I had more than twice, I was left with more cables in the rubbish pile than the keep pile. Joy. Then I came onto keyboards. I always knew I had at least one spare keyboard up there, but it turns out I had 5. 4 went. I also had a lot of worthless SDRAM. It all went. CD/DVD Drives also. All but one went.

So in total I threw out this much shit:

  • An Athlon64.
  • Compaq Deskpro something.
  • Some other crappy PII (I think, never opened it up to find out)
  • 4 boxes of misc. shit.
  • An old keyboard stand/tray thing.
  • Many keyboards/mice.
  • 4 tonnes of cable
  • 2 whole bin bags of paper stuff
  • Many, many old magazines
  • Large amounts of SDRAM
  • Tonnes of old CD/DVD drives
  • 40 trillion remote controls for devices I no longer own

And I still haven’t started on my “desk” yet. Oh shit.

The only thing I kept was some DDR1 RAM. Turns out the prices on ebay aren’t too bad, and with like 2GB of the stuff I might make some cash.

Why the fuck do I keep this crap?

It’s a common thing, don’t worry. I have a growing pile of stuff like that. You never know what might come in handy later on.

That thing you just threw away because you thought it was completely useless and you’d never need it, you could really use right about now. (Generic statement to illustrate the point)

I’d much rather have a pile of new spare parts so that any time I needed a replacement part, I wouldn’t have to go order and wait a week for it to arrive.
